it's the approval of the time now recording Julia thank you Jeff my view it's not right tonight first thing on the agenda is the Frugal of September 15th education committee minutes to approve the minutes from the September 15th meeting of the education committee again can I get a roll call emotion approves 3 0 I'm going to do something that we I've never done being chair of this board however I thought it was appropriate and this case with following our Retreat so I'm going to read a statement that I scared of reflective some of the things that came out of a retreat and where we're going as a board in this end of school as a school board in the education committee the King School Board had a retreat on September 29th primary focus of our retreat was racial and systematic a systemic racism earlier this year in the murder of George Floyd and other individuals reminded us how far we still need to go to Value the lives of black people Discord ologist the importance of fostering anti-racism dismantling systemic racism celebrating diversity and promoting Equity within our schools by you not unanimous vote for decide I work promoting only one goal this year Keene School District board recognizes the needs are this is the gold actually the King School Board School District recognizes the knee create an environment that values diversity inclusion and all that's form the King School Board commits to promoting professional development educational strategies and practices policy review and budgeting to foster a welcoming and safe place for all for each month the education committee will include this important goal on its agenda the effectiveness of this committee's to see will also be viewed and measured through the lens of inclusion and Equity we believe that speaking out matters however taking demonstrable action matters more so I wanted to do that more so just took to the Highlight should have where where our work will be going I'm going forward and kind of what we're thinking in the back of our minds as we're doing the work I got bored of Nexus doctor Maddie student services thank you very much Julia oh yeah you know that was a great lead-in I have at the top of my notes that exact quote that you read from the board retreat so I wanted to make sure that that was because I wasn't there and I wanted to make sure that that was that was sent tonight and again thank you Miss Atkins from that statement one of the one of the action steps that we've taken is forming an ad hoc committee that puts more of a focus on inclusionary practices in special ed and Rebecca and Peter are my contacts for that ad hoc committee and we've had a couple of meetings and hoping to be completely transparent I really tried to wrestle with what approach do we take for this committee I really appreciate the partnership and the added focus on special ed and call Rebecca hopefully tomorrow with Rebecca Peter and I will be talking about our general General approach to formulas committee and it'll involve and appreciative inquiry approach which is a strength-based positive approach to organizational change so it's really open right now but this had hoc committee is forming and its goal is to move people toward the shared vision and sure miss Atkins that this will be an ongoing topic for the egg committee so I plan on reporting out every month with the progress of this this this ad hoc committee if that's okay with you okay so bored to come with that the second thing I have here is really much of my last month was spent quite a bit with school nursing student services also Bob School nursing and I worked really closely with our School nurses around you don't just keeping the community safe keeping our school safe making sure that are algorithms are followed and that are student is sprained my work really closely with Rob around flowcharts and creating different checklists and forms so it was a really really interesting month the school nursing comment was a busy month for school nurse to get starting to die down a little bit but I wanted to report report out to the board on that I'm in feel free to stop me with any questions if you have any questions at all we're continuing to measuring the progress that are measuring progress as to where students are in terms their IEP goals or completing all of the compensatory Ed meetings that we had to hold so I don't know if people remember but the governor came out with an executive order and he said we have to hold all of our we have to have and we have to offer an IEP meeting for every student with a disability within the first 30 days and we've completed that and through that we're identifying some of the areas that students need to work on and next summer I think I'll be a time where we have more students that participate in extended school year program programming to help catch up on some of the skills stop babe lost due to this covid-19 so we're being really mindful about this covid-19 that we have had from an instructional perspective can I ask you a question are we finding that the slide is larger than it would expect it is but I'm going to ask a question anyway we finally got smart larger than at normal are normal times you know Julia I don't really I don't really want to answer that yet because I don't think I don't think I have a completely full picture we've been so focused on getting these meetings getting these readings done in kind of seeing where kids are and actually it's quite a project to document this for the Department of Ed we have to upload the fact that we've done this work and right now we're we're completing that work and then I am confident that next month I can give you a Really Good beat on what the compensatory Ed picture will look like 14 you know I still think parent engagement is high I think engagement the connections are good and they really appreciated having these meetings it's been a nice way to reintroduce coolness ball after being after being disconnected so those meetings were helpful some students are coming in on non hybrid days for special ed services quite a few students are actually as you know stipend students coming on two days and then we have some students on IEPs that come in 3 days and some students come in 4 days and we even have some students that are fully boat that have elected to be fully remote come in to school for IEP services so it really is a it's a mixed bag that way but we're definitely working on providing all of the services as outlaw I didn't buy you peace that we put another bus on the road starting Thursday so there's Sometimes some students that are going to need day transportation to make sure that we get all their service as I've been working with the principal that's a nice development so in first student gets a lot of credit to for working with us to provide that additional bus on the road and I think the last thing I have is that we continue to have department meetings so I meet with the school psychologist on a regular basis as well as the speech path that otie's and the occupational therapist in the physical therapy really brings the SAU together I know I'm the director for Keen but this really helps bring all of the kind of practitioners together with which is a good thing and you know so Brian has grade level needing in lieu of grade-level meetings I have department meetings satellite just wanted the board to know that we we get together as department on a regular basis of any questions for me finger bicycles I think it was one clear with your there were some Disco but the fact that with the remote learning at the end of the year and with covid-19 there's a very strong effort to engage and we continue to engage families every day until until we hear back and then sometimes we are we hear back defensively like a family is just not able to connect right now when that's fine if we document that we we reach out and when we don't hear back we go as far as sending out a truancy officer to do a wellness check so we're really not bashful about that in the principles I believe special education teachers have a strong handle on their caseload and we are making sure people are connected and if enough people if people aren't connected that we want to hear from them anybody knows anybody please just they can reach out to my office anytime thank you you're welcome Rebecca you had a question explain a little more in-depth woohoo like a department meeting includes for you guys so look at my list now and we have about what we say we have about 40 related service providers so that would be our entire School psych Department our entire Speech Pathology Department or entire occupational therapy Flash therapy department and our school nursing department and Hakeem makes up the bulk of that because we're the largest District but you know we all feed into the same Middle School dorm must you must feed into the same middle school we all fit into the same high school so it's really important for us as you know his colleagues in this department as a department have similar practices so we'd. free who meets every month or whatever it is 4 times 4 times a year Rebecca and this this year were meeting as a big big group together because of the circumstances we have now but my first few years here we met individually as departments to sell leave days and we've got a lot of value out of doing it thank you anymore questions for talk to Maddie thank you again I know it's a challenge in the times that we have to meet all the needs so we appreciate your your heart thank you very much Julie and I appreciate being here and y'all have a good night thanks Rick so I take it dear May or June we started talking about might you could have been even earlier with the time that were in reviewing our field trip list on an annual basis for several different reasons one being if you are new board member a field trip could have been approved 10 years ago and it's you wouldn't know if you didn't see this this comprehensive list so we that list to the drive so that we can take a second to review it but also and the current times talk about any issues that may be up or happening that could affect any field trips and as of right now and I didn't get a chance to look cuz I thought we voted not to have any field trips last year but as it looks now there's only one that's in the planning stages of possibly have April of next year Brian could you give us an update on that you're so we'd we talked to what we agreed last year that we would look at the pre-approved all the trips that have been approved in the past the one trip that is on the books for this spring is the DC trip we have about 50 students who have already registered for that trip if you have already registered then the deadline for securing insurance was October 1st I don't know how many of the parents of the 50 you've already registered for the trip did secure sure Insurance even though they were informed that they should secure Insurance biking Middle School by Mrs yelsky if you were to register now the October 1st date does not apply so if you were if you were to register you do have some time to still secure the insurance cuz the insurance is the only way that they get any sort of refund if we were to cancel the trip so if weird cancel the trip weather it's December January March if you don't if you didn't purchase the insurance than you do not get a refund on whatever you've contributed this far for clarity if we decided to cancel this trip because of health reasons right we have a very good reason that where our kids aren't going to school every day and they're doing 60 and we couldn't possibly maintain that on this trip so we decided to cancel it the students only get 75% of their are funds back and then I think that the closer it gets to the trip right that it's even less than that they only get funds back if they if they if they bought the insurance so they only know because companies holding so the company is holding those dates in that service so they get whatever feed a they get but you know if if you didn't purchase the insurance and you're getting zero back Indiana today how many have already registered and she said probably right around 50 but she didn't know the number of families who did purchase the insurance but it's not just maintaining the 6-foot distance you look at what DC looks like terms of are they in the red are they in the yellow I know they're not in the grain so as of right now DC kids aren't going to school are majority of them they aren't going to school so and that's sort of my concern as around the DC trip I'm sure some of the other committee members may have concerns as well dinosaur concerns one the health issue we we know where we won't have a vaccine we won't have any of those types of measures by April to this what is an expensive trip and so our families could lose quite a bit of funds as it relates to that and I'm a little concerned had we are we win will give them a definitive of where this may or may not happen or three throws up to mr. Malay Deanna and I talked to mr. Malay a couple of weeks ago and I don't know if his intent is to wait until after the first of the year and see what is going on nationally or long or at least along the east coast but I don't have an exact answer for you yes I'm going to warn you my dog just had a crazy barking thing so hopefully he won't interrupt and wondering and just in terms of by industry we have a lot of conferences a lot of travel and part of the Dilemma when it comes to canceling and what the deadline is is we generally have to wait for the venue to say you're not allowed to come here before we cancel or we end up holding the bag if that makes sense if we reserved a space so one I'm wondering if if the hotels can't host us the families I would guess should be getting some of their money back regardless of insurance but also I'm wondering is the deadline where were waiting to serve see that what is the tour company tell us before we can make a call I feel like it's early to make a call though I totally understand your concerns but do we have any of the deadline where were the torrent that company that's running the Torah should be giving us we have not been given a deadline by then when they'll make a decision I'm sure that they want all the money so they're going to take it to the very end before they do make a decision read last year last year they were still willing to receive our students and go on a trip it was our decision to cancel that so do you have any information as relates to last year on if the kids had insurance they got it back or not or if you didn't have insurance you loss of funding do we have do we know how that worked is that where you at they didn't have insurance they didn't get in they didn't receive their funds back we we ended up having a pretty contentious conversation with that provider and I think most them got back a small percentage with or without insurance but they didn't get nearly back what we had wanted so we sent out an email when we started opening up registration for the 2021 trip mrs. Ellis key communicated several times that you know because of the pandemic we don't know if we'll go so I'm high encouraging you to take the insurance pay the extra money to take the insurance so if we do not go you receive a higher percentage of your refund and that may be why she only has 50 register right now questions but all other all of our plan by school state that we will not participate field trips walking field trips will be considered but at this time there are no field trips so our plan no field trips but yet we're planning field trip has been planned for they plan this well in advance so it's been on the books and now we're you know it be missing Malaysian when to cancel it we developed the individual plans by site that are attached to the SAU plan it states in there that there are no field trips at this time and walking field trips will be considered so it really comes down to what happens across the country with the pandemic over by the next couple of months before I so we planned cotrip in the middle of a pandemic even though we didn't know what was going to happen I don't know where they start I don't know when they start planning and receiving money for this Juliet know if I don't know if the seventh grade start fundraising and planning for the trip at the start of 7th grade which was well prior to March so I don't know I'm what I used to take kids to DC it was more than a year planning anchor on April is when they start having the meetings and then the payments turn around May or June the final payment should be due somewhere in December for the trip in April guess Tanger I'm going to get started now that you said that you know that it's possible final payments haven't even been made yet I'm I'm kind of surprised if this tour group was so uncooperative last year knowing that we were in the middle of state-mandated shutdowns in and many states were there they were willing to refund to work with our family that I kind of wonder why we signed up with them again and whether we should really revisit that if the final payments have been made do we need to work with them further to say we are not going to make a final payment unless we have some kind of a refund deal if there's another rabbit I don't I don't know if they will work with us on that it made it free it's pretty clear in their paperwork of when the deadlines when the deadlines are they were not willing to work with us call Asher look for someone new l i and their defense I think we've worked with this company for a long time and so when you're moving that number students you were someone that you're comfortable and reliable with with that being said we have some onus on this and that we knew we were in the middle of a pandemic and that this could potentially be the outcome can I second-guess Keanu and Rob on why they made the decision to go ahead and plan this trip in April we have a proximately 2 to 300 students in the 8th grade juicy around 2:25 ish and so we have about 50 in the past we've had a bigger number that would have attended bored I think we still need to think about and as a committee rather what do we want to continue to do around field trips we have left it up to Administration in their plan to make this decision I know last year we actually voted as afford to not let any overseas trip happen and I don't think they're happening now didn't plan them in the midst of this I don't know if if that's the recommendation we want to do going forward or not or we just want to use this is informational and learn from it really accurate because we stripped that we canceled last year was pushed back till this February and it wasn't until the start of the year that we that we actually cancel the police trip cuz we just all we did was moving back from when it was supposed to go last April to this February and it wasn't until the start of the year that we cancel for this February because we're in the middle of a pandemic and we now have a better Vision that it's not going to get better before February that makes sense yeah I know in overseas they weren't they weren't allowing visitors either they're not allowed if you had a you're there were having but I do believe cause we have that new overnight trips out of state overnight whether it's International or what are the states that you know should come before the board in the board had asked that they come before education committee and a little bit more discussion there is a quest just yelled looking at are we overlapping do we have three or four really similar trips running are they educational are they tied in and anyway we have seen some that there weren't and some little and then there's always the question of accessibility LTD Brougham have more and more trips if it off and it's a very limited number of students I think of something the board should be considering it talkin about so information so we have that to compare of new troops come up I don't think we should give up that serve ability to have some oversight and knowledge and the time Becca I guess I just want to clarify it seems like this is the one sing if you want to come to field trips what is our role tonight is this informational I mean I seen this has been because we were proved the strip in the past been approved by the board at this point do we sit we're just waiting on I mean it just up to Rob at this point whether this happens is that and then we're just kind of giving our input her what is the stage is that correct yes I am I'm not a hundred percent sure if we could have make a recommendation to the full board we make adjustments as a relates to our it's Rob's decision to connect any please don't interrupt me I don't know if as a committee that we make a recommendation to the full board to pass a policy that limits our field trips going forward until we're out of this unusual circumstance that were in right now I do know yes once we've made app it's up to Rob whether he makes a decision or not but we still have oversight as a board and as a committee as a relates to what's happening in the schools policy oversight we don't we can't run play today we can't direct them to do anything but we could as a policy I think at this point if I don't have any objections I would just inform the full board I don't I personally don't feel comfortable voting and telling them not to do this from our committee but I think it's important that we keep it on the agenda in front of the board to let them know what's happening the release of this particular field trip or any other ones that are coming up that we are not aware of and as a board we may be able to have that conversation yes Rebecca I just wanted to just get Arthur I just think if if we're still officially we're still on something like a hybrid schedule done and we're telling people not to travel out of state to travel down there it's you know it just goes against everything that we've set up at seams and also I think we have to think about is it is the educational benefit of the trip or I guess rob you think about is how is the benefit of this trip worse than 14 days of the students have been after aren't you in the mess on Bingham person in their classes once we get back because that I believe all right if that's their going Upstate and they're coming back home that's going to follow as well so and I kind of agree with Inga in the sense that if we've had such a but if there was such a contentious deal with getting any kind of refund out of this company last year I don't know why we would you know why people are putting any money towards this unless it's for the most part of sure thing which it obviously doesn't seem like it's a I would maybe just also say if you know an RN to just I don't know what we can do as a board like you were saying Julia but it may be just you know give the sense sense of urgency from ra and don't you know what you about this being resolved one way or the other at least that you were taking like presidents and as you know what comes to priority of the administration so that we're not straying families along till till the 11th Hour thank you I think I want to stay this field trip it's like a rite of passage and so I I get the consideration of still presenting it my daughter went on this field trip with George's daughter went on this field trip and that's the one of the one thing they say look for it to it from 6th grade it's just weird Jess and such fortunate times that these traditional things that we've been able to do that we are not being able to provide for our students and I'm sure people were trying to hold on to that I think as a board though our responsibility is more about the policy as it relates to protecting our students and our faculty because that's who has to go on this trip we would have to pull nurses to go on this trip and our teachers and then they all will have to come back like you quarantine if we're still in the same state that were in currently if I don't have any objections from the rest of the committee I will add to our or Brian I will add this to my report to the full board just making them aware of the concerns that are going on at the release of this field trip for field trips in this time and that as a board if we feel there is a need to have policy and we can move it to that that states otherwise it's in Ross hands no Texans or any other yes Rebecca is a question or just when it comes to the timing of things is it something that policy should consider next not in the sense of of passing anything or getting it done but just to have something in in the works if we would need cuz it's just seems like it's kind of a time-sensitive issue and just that I don't know but policy might want to just have a very brief discussion about what if we needed a pause play hold that policy would look like so that maybe the month after that policy can get put in place so we would have something done by you Knows by The New Year if we needed to take that stuff that makes any sense as it was supposed to come out next week now please I don't have that discussion and we're pushing stuff off you know another month and she and she just my thought so just with the timing of everything the way the committee's lineup I don't think our hands would be tied I'm not as good parliamentary as but I don't think I think if we needed a policy there is a way to suspend the rules that are full board meeting if we need it to to do something on the emergency stamp anger of a question you know the school board in any way that I support this are pushing for this but I think it's the whole world got together and said we are we are making a decision that this trip is going to stop this year for situation I don't think we need to go through building a multi-month policy to have the ability to take that boat and again I'm not suggesting we should do that but I don't think that would prevent us from bring it to the Border making a decision if we felt it was important enough I agree Brian did you have a comment you want to make sure this would require a policy this is just a decision made by the board and partnering with the superintendent about what's the what's the internal procedures moving forward until the pandemic is over I wouldn't necessarily require a policy you already have a policy related to field trips and how to review you wouldn't have a policy to shut down field trips is just a board and superintendent decision I was just I'm trying to learn you know that the procedure in the order of things I didn't mean to anyone any other thoughts on any other events I know this one is you know I'm receiving tons of emails and conversations and thoughts as it relates to this but it is there any any other field trips that we have going on or questions or for anyone let's move on to late start or star time data I did get a request that we not call it late start time data and going forward if we could call it start time. Can we get a report on that Brian we don't have any start time dude cuz we haven't even said anything to marks I thought you were bringing us some different ideas watch that we could set I gave those benchmark last year we did that late start time data and then at the last meeting we decided that we need to brainstorm new benchmarks because the benchmarks from last year wouldn't be relevant to this year the current situation so we were going to brainstorm new benchmarks that we can do in a hybrid situation yes and I would not be anecdotal even though this year is very strange and may not give us comparable data hard and having these benchmarks was looking out three years for years and say what was the impact so I just want to say I hope we are we have to have the data that we originally wanted to capture cuz even even if we feel like it's not a great comparison this year and next year to your after we should have those original benchmarks I agree and good because you know we're not going to we're not going to be able to make a lot of judgment based on academic data from what we are currently doing with any kind of start time and then attend obviously there's an issue cuz we have some kids starting today and remote some kids starting today on on-site so a lot of it may come down to purely anecdotal of what are the teachers seeing from their students attitudinally when they start the day but Gathering Gathering valuable data that we can do a longitudinal study of this year is kind of an off-year it just a clarify we do have the data from last year before the start yes yes we do do we have any thoughts on what we could gather around this year that would be useful going for it yes Inga and I would say it's it's worth talking with teachers I know they're overwhelmed than and who knows distressing what's happening in the world may not give us a good read on house Yale students are feeling this worth working at we talked about going to the counselors also just to get a sense cuz part of it was for mental health issues so that might be worth your sending out for them to be your feelers out from them may I do a I'm sorry I think what we could do is we could ask principals to look at some of the students at who had significant tennis shoes last year and look at their attendance this year and even though it's in a hybrid situation are they regularly attending already attending school on time particularly for the middle school and high school who made it had some tardy issue with a cohort of students and even though it's only two days a week and if your head Mitchell habitually tardy I don't know if going to two days a week is going to change those bad habits so we might be I'll look at some of that data as well and and make it more of a cohort lens rather than looking at full School I like that idea any any others yes Rebecca I was just had to make sure that we're reaching out to the families just ask for their meal quality of Me no feedback I guess just not just teachers and also I mean because this is the wall that is it's very hard to compare it to Prior year is but we could in a way compare it to make comparisons with him this year and it sounds like it's remember if we had we looked at maybe the high school but like a first. Class to see how they are performing if you just picked like algebra or something like that I'm compared to later blocks throughout the day and then look at how that's it if there was any kind of difference maybe you know kids average were doing that great and then you look at like that first. Block this year compared to other blocks throughout the day at just to see you know what I mean if you're comparing if you stay within the year to make any kind of comparisons if there's a way to do that so that takes the like a covid variable out as much as possible if we could find a way to if you know we're looking at maybe for first. Or early in the morning students not performing as well because it's so early something we can think about and then again just look at y'all making sure the reach out to families and see how many issues like crazy this year also we also got the same as positive changes in bed and especially the middle schoolers and high schoolers yes Brian I think that's important Rebecca and I think when we look at start time data I would I would be hesitant to look at academic data from this year 2 pass years but look at it like you said maybe from beginning of the year to the end of the year but going forward cuz as certain school begin to change instructional practice and it changes assessment practiced within their building what a grade represents is going to be dead from what it has been in the past so I think looking at perhaps a little bit of last year's attendance and behavioral data but certainly assessment and academic data going forward I will be helpful I know one of the one of the reasons that the change in time was important was it sports injuries one of the things that supposedly help cut down on Sports Injury injuries because the kids were arrested they were they have more asleep we also sort of capture that data as well as maybe accidents I know the kids aren't on the road as much as they would have been with covet a having those that information as well then going forward we can see if there's any huge swings or change anymore anything else so I take away is we're going to catch you the data that we talked about maybe on a smaller scale as far as looking at obituary fenders as it relates to late time even though we're Gathering the information for everybody but me you taking those things out that we know had issues and maybe looking at them as well as having a comparison throughout the day and seeing if there's a change as waste start time my receding that correctly gas Rebecca whatever we decide I think we need and I don't think that I've seen yet that we have and I document with the markers that were going to use your Justin place to compile all this data that we can keep like a you know something we could review monthly or bi-monthly or whatever it is but let's just make sure maybe that we have a physical place where all of this lives that is accessible to just money throughout the year I think it's going to be difficult for us to get that maybe we could get our benchmarks but thinking about all the moving parts that are happening right now and days unusual time having them gather that on a monthly basis or maybe a lot to ask a list of what we're really sorry but if you create the benchmark and if we identify the benchmarks running running reports to those benchmarks to PowerSchool and monthly basis it'll automatically upload your spreadsheet so that there it's a running total so if your benchmarks are aligned with the date of that we can retrieve through PowerSchool a monthly retrieval is not a big obstacle anything else on start time we have Bowl board goes on here and I kind of I unless anyone have anything else to add as a relates to report gold I'm the only thing I have is just remembering that we're adding it to our agenda every month so it's sort of front-and-center when we're having conversations and making decisions that were kind of reminded of that goal silly, and I have anyone else have anything else signed up for go Rebecca just it just to make sure that now that we've created at it's being shared now that every one of the administration seeking it and maybe even to get to Reno to building ministration and teachers just so that she had to kind of make sure that we're all on the same page I don't know that's been like they sent out to to all of the King School staff yet but that might be a good idea to just update them cuz we don't necessarily change your goals every year so they might not know I'm just sayin teachers to be aware I'm a be how to take that into account in lesson planning and so on but I think that has to be it has to be broadcasted because if I'm the building principal I'm also looking at my building go through the lens of the history goal we why do we have why we have building goals that aren't allowed to are congruent with our district goal the district goals should inform what's happening in building so I would I would hope that we do we share with our building administrators and ask them to share at a staff meeting is not just from a creek your lens but we're looking at it what you can do to advisory what you can do it through small group social thinking what you can do through SEL I think that should be just like any data we get from aimsweb or SAS me those things should be the lens that we set our building goals from well said Brian I agree I agree I think it's and that's sort of why it was important for the goal to come from us and to State how important this is to this and then have it filter down yes Brian but you know I think that it I think you need to extend that conversation because you know when I I'm being very very very honest this is the first district which I've worked where there wasn't a strategic plan based on the vision of the mission and vision of the district that is you know a 325 your strategic plan that is Con the updated because that should also be what building principals are are using two who were asking building building principles to base their cost center budgets on their build goals and initiatives but if if we have you know if I'm just looking at Keene and we have six schools and Keene and they're all creating individual goals that are in cream growing and then what do we expect for student outcomes when we're working individually and not coherently so you know I think having a larger strategic plan that and this would be one of the goals within that strategic plan under reticular and have its own the indicators but I think that's a larger conversation you bringing the soup in creating that but yes no I agree I'm sure there's some feelings as it relates to a strategic plan that's not necessary for here but yeah I agree any other comments or questions on around the colon maybe, you're making sure we're communicating this out to everyone yes Rebecca said more of an idea it might be an interesting thing and again this is kind of a crazy or but if we can somebody's osito to all of the schools in their teacher is to even have like to invite back teachers who come up with lesson plans or like units that you know are teaching to this so that are acknowledging the colon to come back in like Rosetta where to be a good way to kind of involve you know kind of like to make it complete feedback loop here at 9 to bring teachers back to the porridge kind of explaining and sharing Hauser teaching this C note to students later in the year that sounds like an author of maybe doing something we haven't done in a while isn't that inviting the schools to come back to us and Report happening in their schools I know I miss getting those I feel more connected when the schools come and talk to us about what's happening and in that would be pretty pretty great have them as a relates to the goals that are coming down kind of reporting back and telling us about all the great and creative things that they're doing in their schools I think I saw in the first and then Brian there's a lot going on just education me to leave a lot of presentation in terms of asking for real you know serious curriculum development and change and making reports I think we need to be honest about what's happening right now in our schools and I'm just trying to teach right now in the middle so maybe that would be you know we got the goal we're communicating it next year to really see where the school district is out but I just feel nervous that over the next few months asking people to come in with new curriculum when they're they're just trying to trying to survive right now and then keep educating our kids I don't want to overwhelm people her or worry them so maybe miscommunication not necessarily telling them to go out and create new curriculum that's not at all what I refer in the past one of the things that we always had as a communication gap right we we don't necessarily know what's going on in our schools and vice-versa they want a platform to be able to come to the board and about the issues and things that they want to talk about when we when we invite our schools and we usually invite them and ask them where would it fit in their schedule when we invite them we don't give them typically any guidelines other than we'd like for you to come and talk to us about what you want to talk about in the reason at 4 that is so that it's not just asking that's not a huge task on them but it also gives them an opportunity to come and talk to us which is why always the teachers they always talk about things we don't come to them and we don't ask them for their input so it gives them an opportunity to come before the education committee and talk about Ring things to ask if they'd like to bring us without putting the burden on them yes Brian in November we're going to have Keene Middle School in Keene High School present Keene Middle School I'm Deanna zelski and Sean O'Mara are going to do a presentation to the Ed committee on culturally responsive teaching which is the board goal you know implied bias and diversity so they're going to be doing a presentation they're going to do it to it they were going to do it today but Sean's son has a soccer game so I postponed it to November but at the same time Vienna will give an update on KMS and then Kim Baker and Cindy Gallagher will present on any changes to the program of studies because they are looking at classes and the number of electives and how to synthesize a program of studies which is a pretty comprehensive document we don't necessarily offer all the classes within that program of study but at the same time talk about yellow no data and also talked about yellow dated for co-curricular activities and dr. Gallagher will be giving a brief update on Play-Doh and Sheehan High School curriculum design relative to the board goal I'm all of our teachers are still doing Crystal design during PLC time and during Thursday time when you look at that goal is not really just this massive rewriting of curriculum if I'm teaching Huck Finn rom cheats in To Kill a Mockingbird I'm not just looking at the narrative and I'm looking at it the matically where I can bring in the the black perspective into that conversation and teach both sides a particular topic and not just keep it one-sided and that's what the culture responsive teaching is so you know it's it's looking at your current unit design and how you can bring in a variety of perspectives and look at a variety of documents with her primary sources are secondary sources through the perspective of all of the parties involved and not just one particular party yes Rebecca I just wanted to Echo what Ryan decided what you said before Julie I don't think response to what you said in God that we I'm not asking anyone to write a new curriculum and bring it to show us the next month I bet there's already some pretty amazing stuff happening prior to us even making a skull that sitting in a like that's that's now falls under our goals and like Brian said it it really is just some of the time looking at the way you're presenting content and then you know just kind of maybe restructuring you're doing so I it's more it again and just as I guess I feel he was saying is to have have those the schools and teachers and school administrators back into this committee cuz I do miss they think that's like you it was one of our few Outlets of us really connecting on a board and a building level so no just and I think teachers are probably who already have that in the curriculum or who could easily modified stuff to be able to come and I think that they'd want I mean I would assume I would hope that some of them would want to come and share what's going on or even from a perspective of like what they need in order to be able to make the changes for next year we have come speak to us about that also I'm even if it's not something to get in Woodland right away find a car for that vet any other comments gorgo okay I asked Bryce add the Cove in Student Success on there and I purposely worded at that way I just wanted to have a placeholder for us to have to talk about is there a need that are coming up Ryan so it's sort of a place where if you see that the school's needs something as a relates to the board or the education committee where we can support that right and because we know too cold there are going to be some laughs and education whatever that maybe I know when student services they had to buy some software that was $6,000 to help their students give that kind of stuff that's sort of what I was thinking that we could talk about here it could be that you know what everything is okay but you don't need any support as a Lacey the Border you know anything but I wanted to put something there and Chase just for us to be thinking that way yes and I don't disagree Julia I think you know it when I look at Kobe's Jordan 6s I think Wednesday aimsweb data comes back in the SNES as interim data comes back you know what kind of remember the SAS interim is measuring the previous year so if I'm a 5th grader I'm being tested on 4th weight scale so we can we'll be getting that data back probably November and will be able to look in and identify you know how large with a gap from the spring but also you know we're already when you're looking at resources buildings are going through their own budgets and making those decisions with their current line and Budget Blinds and through the actual money or through mr. Roar for example the high school you know other than the SAT we don't we don't have any student data I mean High School's you know they use the GPS safety and the SAT but sometime that's like taking temperature with a teaspoon it doesn't always give you the data that you want to effectively close some of the skill gaps for kids so dr. Gallagher and I had a conversation this program called edmentum exact path so she's using that to for 9th and 10th graders to identify as a universal screener and to help close the gap reading and math for 9th and 10th grade I know. He is looking at a program called Lexia which is a reading program for this year to help students who are below grade level two do some extra reading exercises so we've met some of those decisions already based on the limited data that we did have it will build the refine those decisions would more data but I think the first step would be getting that aimsweb in SAS interim data to identify how big were the Gap from last spring and is it is it a typical or is it the same is it the same spread that we are accustomed to because we might realize well third grade and Webb date of this year's pretty close to what the third grade Ames what date it was last year what you mean that you know it there what happened last spring in a remote setting did have some positive effects on students so we won't know until we get the data and be able to unpack that data so that it'll be exciting to see what that data comes back on I'm hoping wishful thinking that it's the normal slide but and it sounds like you guys are already on top of Gathering that data and making changes but I wanted to let you know have a play smart but having that conversation and and being able to support whatever needs come up I know I was on a committee meeting high school today and they're looking forward on not necessarily starving but Wishful things to know we have this issue what could we possibly do to fix that one of those was going back to being live in the classroom one of the things we want to point it out just make sure you review the policy so just kind of reminded me cuz there's changes that's going to happen that made me. that we are having a place that we could bring that to you know sometimes there's things that yeah we could make sense to do it but we got something that's standing in our way and so hopefully we can be here to kind of get out and get those things out of the way so we can move forward and that was my goal for having something related to kobiton the on the agenda any other comments or questions were anybody else would like to see let's move on to the budget I put that on here also just as a reminder for Budget Seasons here if you we are aware of any budget increases that are coming up for next year or changes on we need to start having those conversations and making sure we're passing that information to the budget committee so it's just a reminder of placeholder to remind us that if we are aware of any changes this is one of the things that we would find out when the schools were coming to us if they be pushing changes that ain't like seeing next year and we would add those things to her what the budget potentially could look like we have an idea and we passed it on to the finance committee so they where the budget item I'm not sure if we have any major things that were thinking about for next year's Brian so. E Tim and I met with all the principles last week 4 the first budget meeting and they we went around and they each gave can endure their big ticket items that they were thinking about and Tim and Dottie noted those and we've we've begun having our our first meeting with each of the cost centers so wouldn't Tim bring that information back to the bike to the finance committee if it's related to academics it was in Ireland rate if we need to cope it we may be going to more online textbooks well that's a big ticket item if that's the case then we typically would have that conversation do the egg committee I would stand behind it I would say that most of the big-ticket items were not necessarily academically related it might be or service-oriented or might be physical plant oriented so I I don't have that listing listed in front of me but I can I can take a look at it and see what it is what is on that list that you're having to create more work is just sort of bringing when you're hearing about it's going to bring it through the committee so that we can ask the since from the education committee side point before it gets to you know the actual budget books and a lot of times it'll eliminate the pushback that happens or could potentially happen answers for questions basically anybody else on budget or any is there any any other any other from you Brian just the future agenda items I just I just think because we're going to have all. Maddie is always on every month but because we're going to have KHS in KMS and KMS is going to be as I said talking about cultural responsive teaching implied bias diversity and then Deanna will give a building base update so won't dr. Gallagher than they're also talking about the program of studies number of Elo is also the ELO for athletic crew as well I don't know if you want to add a whole lot more because those maybe you know when I was 20 25 minute presentations would question so now I agree I think that's a school agenda for next week if we can though bring back if the task was for this committee members to bring back potential start time benchmarks for this year than we could bring those back share them agree upon them and then create a spread keep moving forward with those indicators I agree we need to at least come to an agreement on what we're going to do or what we want to look for those email and then I can put them in a spreadsheet and bring the spreadsheet back to the next meeting whatever you want to do except I have him in advance and I put them in a spreadsheet and we can delete from the spreadsheet rather than sharing out and debating each one might be more efficient if I have the indicators in advance to put in the spreadsheet sounds like a great idea Inga I just left and I agree I think go ahead and come with a spreadsheet cuz it sounded like I thought the way the conversation ended that last year we actually did settle on a group of Benchmark we have those in the folder and then the question is do we want to add a couple more but I don't know I have to look at those indicators from we agreed upon last year because I don't know if all of those will be relevant to this year because of the modality that were using for instruct so I think I think might have to buy take me to buy you some but I think we need to I think we need to look at a little bit more qualitatively not just quantitatively which has the indicators we chose or no just for this year so I think we should grab every wanted we should grab the data from last year even if we have to admit it's not giving us a good picture we should really have that I agree with that so we have consumed consistency so we're going to populate with what we agreed upon prior to review it at next meeting and maybe instead of a long conversation soda acknowledge that. Data won't may not be filled in this year but we have history yes Rebecca I don't remember I must have happened before I even enjoy I don't think we've had like an actual and has a lot of conversations about quality indicators would babe I don't believe that's why I was asking to create once I don't think we have like an actual list created of what all those benchmarks are indicators or whatever you want to call but they're going to be and I think we sat we were talking about you know if I remember that conversation from maybe in like a springer which are correctly it was talking about what I'm looking online a Torino like is it going to be more quantitative or qualitative stuff like that but I don't think we ever actually narrowed something down that's why I was thinking I was saying earlier that we just need to just actually have a physical list somewhere safe. if we did have something I would hope it would have been assuming I don't think we actually have a look and see what we have I don't want to necessarily put Yonder spy Bryan go back and find it right this second but if you could check to see what we had out there if you have a 9 months there any additional benchmarks that anyone's thinking of can you email Jess Brian and so when he brings it back next month so add it on and then we will We may say makes Verdun make sense so it can be sore for a quick conversation next month on this on The Benchmark we had eight from last January could you read them Brian if it's not he's going to put it in the but I will also be in the folder for us it will have access to it or I will also share with you individually and then that way we can either we can update it or him or we can cuz I don't think we need to have a long conversation on on the benchmarks again at this point agree or disagree but I did agree the next month is probably going to be in full and Paxil I lost my train of thought through that conversation and Brian if you're I know you you did a great job planning ahead to get the presentation for this month when you're having conversations with the built-in administrator that there seems that they're excited about their wanting that, if we can kind of think of ped you know like November December we may not because it's different things going on but we can sort of plan for the route and I'll go ahead and put them on our agenda if there's things that they're excited they want to come and talk to us I just want to continue to give them an opportunity to bring a present we heard a lot from Franklin and it's it's been great that I am I get excited to hear about what they're doing and it's in the way they are. They just would love to hear from some of the other schools to we hear from the Middle School we hear from the high school on the right racist I'll bring it up at a weekly principal meeting and brainstorm some ideas on their plate any more than they already have but letting them know we're opening the door for them to communicate before it any other other we're good so we are turning at 6:50 good job thank you guys thank you Brian
